Legal
Compliance & Regulatory Information
How Tinka complies with Uganda's laws, licensing, data protection, and consumer-rights requirements.
Last updated: April 12, 2025
1. Legal & business registration
Tinka operates as a registered Ugandan business with valid trading licences for ride-hailing services. We file taxes with URA, pay VAT where applicable, and comply with Uganda Investment Authority requirements.
2. Driver licensing & vehicle compliance
Every Tinka driver must hold:
- Valid Class A (boda) or Class B (car) driving permit from the Uganda Driving Permit system.
- Police clearance letter (Form A).
- LC1 letter from the area chairperson.
- Valid vehicle logbook and current insurance.
We verify these documents manually in our Kampala office before approving any driver.
3. Data protection (Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019)
Tinka is registered as a data collector with the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO) of Uganda. We collect only the data we need, store it securely, and never sell it. Full privacy policy here.
4. Mobile money compliance
We process mobile-money payments via licensed partners (MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, PawaPay). Our partners are registered with the Bank of Uganda and comply with the National Payment Systems Act. We do not directly hold customer funds — payouts are processed end-to-end through licensed payment service providers.
5. KCCA & traffic regulations
Drivers operating in Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) jurisdiction comply with KCCA boda-boda stage regulations, helmet requirements, and routing rules. We do not require drivers to operate from any specific stage — Tinka is digital-first.
6. Consumer rights
Riders are entitled to:
- Transparent upfront pricing before booking.
- Refunds for billing errors (typically within 7 business days).
- Recourse for lost items, complaints, and disputes via our Kampala team.
7. Insurance
Drivers carry mandatory third-party insurance (per Ugandan law). For passenger safety, Tinka also provides supplemental cover during active trips — full details available on request.
8. Accessibility
We work to make the app accessible to users with disabilities. The app supports screen readers, large text, and high contrast. If you have specific accessibility needs we have not met, please contact us.
9. Reporting concerns
To report a regulatory, safety, or compliance concern: email support@tinkataxi.com with "Compliance" in the subject, or call +256 760 722262. We acknowledge within 48 hours and respond fully within 7 business days.
