Everything a driver and their vehicle must have before joining Tinka in Uganda. Bring this checklist to our Kampala office and most drivers are on the road within 5 working days.

Last updated: April 12, 2025

1. Driver eligibility

  • Aged 21 or older.
  • Valid Ugandan Driving Permit — Class B (car) or Class A (boda boda).
  • At least 2 years of driving experience.
  • Clean record — no major traffic violations or convictions in the last 3 years.
  • Working knowledge of Kampala and surrounding roads.
  • Functional smartphone (Android 2018+ or iPhone 7+).

2. Required documents

  • Original National ID.
  • Valid driving permit (front and back).
  • Police clearance letter (Form A — issued by your nearest police station, approx UGX 30,000).
  • LC1 letter signed by your area chairperson.
  • Mobile money account in your own name (MTN MoMo or Airtel Money) — this is where payouts go.
  • One passport-style photo (looking at the camera, neutral background).

3. Vehicle requirements (car)

  • Sedan, SUV, or hatchback. 2010 or newer preferred.
  • Valid vehicle logbook in your name (or signed agreement if owned by someone else).
  • Current insurance certificate — comprehensive or third-party (at minimum).
  • Working seatbelts in all seats.
  • Functioning headlights, brake lights, indicators, horn.
  • Clean interior. AC working if installed.
  • Four wheels with adequate tread (no bald tyres).

4. Vehicle requirements (boda boda)

  • Motorcycle 125cc or higher. Roadworthy condition.
  • Valid logbook.
  • Current insurance.
  • Two helmets at all times — one for you, one for the passenger. KCCA requires this and Tinka enforces it.
  • Working brakes, lights, indicators.
  • Reflective rear element (legal requirement at night).

5. Inspection process

Bring your vehicle to our office at CW, 2nd floor, Akamwesi Mall (Gayaza-Kampala Road). A Tinka inspector checks brakes, tyres, lights, seatbelts/helmets, interior cleanliness, and overall roadworthiness. Inspection takes 15–20 minutes. Failed items must be fixed and re-inspected.

6. Ongoing requirements

To stay active on Tinka:

  • Renew your insurance every year — upload the new certificate before the old one expires.
  • Renew your driving permit before it expires.
  • Maintain a rating above 4.5 (we coach drivers below this; persistent low ratings may result in suspension).
  • Annual re-inspection of vehicle.
  • No accepting cash off-platform (rider must pay through the app).

7. Suspension causes

Drivers may be suspended for:

  • Driving without insurance or with expired documents.
  • Reckless driving or causing an accident.
  • Harassment of riders.
  • Asking riders for cash on top of the app fare.
  • Letting someone else use your account.
  • Persistent cancellations after riders have been waiting.

8. How to apply

Download the Tinka Driver app from Google Play, upload your documents, and visit our Kampala office for the orientation + inspection. Full driver application guide here.
